Order (with settling)28.8 cu ft – 31.2 cu ftOrder about 20–30% extra to allow for settling after hydration and colonization.
Spawn needed9.6 lb – 14.4 lbEstimate from ~0.40–0.60 lb spawn per cu ft of chips — use the higher end; under-spawning a deep bed invites contamination.
Sanity check: 1 cubic yard of chips covers about 81 sq ft at 4 in deep.
Layering plan
- 1
Soak wood chips in non-chlorinated water for ~24 hours.
- 2
Dig out 4–8 in (10–20 cm) of soil across the site and line the bottom and sides with burlap or punctured cardboard.
- 3
Add a thin spawn layer, then 2–4 in (5–10 cm) of hydrated chips, then more spawn with a light dusting of gypsum and hydrated lime. Repeat to 8–10 in (20–25 cm) — never past 18 in (46 cm).
- 4
Mulch with cardboard/burlap while colonizing; replace with 6–8 in (15–20 cm) of straw as fruiting approaches. Optionally sprinkle fresh coffee grounds for a nitrogen boost.
