Why tincture, not powder
Functional mushroom supplements come in three main forms: capsules, powders, and tinctures. They're not interchangeable — each format has trade-offs in absorption speed, bioavailability, convenience, and shelf life.
Capsules are the easiest to take but the slowest to absorb. The gelatin shell dissolves over 20-30 minutes; the powder inside has to be broken down by stomach acid before any of the bioactives become available. Total time-to-effect: 45-90 minutes typical.
Powders are extremely flexible — stir into coffee, smoothie, soup, or whatever — but they have texture, can settle if not blended, and have variable absorption depending on what you've mixed them into.
Tinctures are the precision tool. Concentrated mushroom extract suspended in food-grade alcohol, delivered by dropper, absorbed sublingually (under the tongue) in 5-15 minutes or via swallow-and-digest in 30-45 minutes. The fastest, most controllable form of functional mushroom delivery available outside of professional pharmaceutical preparation.
Colorado Cultures' Dual Extracted Pure Mushroom Tincture is exactly this — a 2 fl oz UV-protected bottle of all-organic, dual-extracted, single-species mushroom concentrate. One bottle = approximately one month at typical daily-supplement dosing.

Mushroom bioactives split roughly into two solubility categories:
- Water-soluble compounds — beta-glucans, polysaccharides, water-soluble proteins, ergothioneine
- Fat/alcohol-soluble compounds — triterpenes (ganoderic acids in Reishi), ergosterol, sterol derivatives
A water-only extract captures the polysaccharides but misses the triterpenes. An alcohol-only extract captures the triterpenes but misses the polysaccharides. Dual extraction uses both solvents in sequence, capturing the full bioactive spectrum:
- Hot water extraction — typically a slow simmer for 4-12 hours pulls out water-soluble compounds
- Alcohol extraction — typically high-proof ethanol macerated over weeks pulls out alcohol-soluble compounds
- Combination — the two extracts are then combined in calibrated ratios and bottled
The result is a single tincture that delivers the full bioactive profile of the source mushroom — what 90% of cheaper "mushroom extract" products fail to deliver. Many competing products are water-only and consequently miss large portions of the bioactive compounds the consumer thought they were buying.
UV-protected packaging matters
The 2 fl oz bottle is dark glass with UV protection [VERIFY: amber, cobalt blue, or violet glass]. The reason:
- Mushroom bioactives are light-sensitive — UV exposure degrades many of the active compounds over time
- Alcohol-based tinctures evaporate slightly through translucent containers — UV-protective glass with proper closure minimizes loss
- Standard clear bottles can lose 20-40% potency within 6 months of light exposure
- UV-protected glass holds potency for 2-5+ years in proper storage
This is a quality marker — supplements packaged in clear or translucent bottles are typically not built for long-term potency retention. Dark glass signals serious manufacturing.
What's in the bottle (and what's NOT)
The tincture is intentionally minimal:
- Mushroom extract (the active ingredient, from dual extraction)
- Food-grade ethanol (the suspension medium and preservative)
- Distilled water (to balance the alcohol concentration)
- Nothing else [VERIFY: confirm with manufacturer that there are no preservatives, flavorings, sweeteners, or fillers]
What's specifically NOT in it:
- No sugar or artificial sweeteners
- No artificial flavoring
- No preservatives (the alcohol is the preservative)
- No fillers or bulking agents
- No GMO ingredients
- No gluten (vegan, gluten-free, paleo, keto compatible)
- No animal products
- No psilocybin or other psychoactive compounds — these are functional mushrooms, not psychoactive species
Dietary compatibility
Each tincture meets:
- ✓ Gluten-free
- ✓ Vegan
- ✓ Paleo
- ✓ Keto (carb content negligible)
- ✓ Dairy-free
- ✓ Nut-free
- ✓ Soy-free
- ✓ Sugar-free
- ✓ Non-GMO [VERIFY certification]
For users with dietary restrictions, the tincture is one of the cleanest functional supplements available — no excipients, no fillers, no hidden additives.
Why "monthly supply" matters
The 2 fl oz size is calibrated for a roughly 30-day supply at typical daily dosing:
- 2 fl oz ≈ 60 mL
- Typical dose: 1-2 mL (20-40 drops) per day
- Total daily doses per bottle: 30-60
- Approximate monthly supply: 30 daily doses at 2 mL, or 60 doses at 1 mL
This format is convenient because:
- One bottle = one month for easy supplement tracking
- Travel-friendly (no powder spills, no capsule containers, fits in any toiletry bag)
- Sub-3.4 fl oz for airline carry-on compatibility (this size is TSA-friendly)
- Replaces multiple capsule bottles — one tincture bottle = roughly 60-90 capsules' worth of active compounds
Sublingual vs. swallowed dosing
The tincture format allows for two distinct consumption modes:
Sublingual (under the tongue, then swallow)
- Drop 1-2 mL under the tongue
- Hold for 30-60 seconds
- Swallow
Onset: 5-15 minutes
Best for: Fast-acting effects (especially Cordyceps before exercise, or Lion's Mane before an important meeting)
Pro tip: Don't eat or drink for 5 minutes before or after sublingual dosing to maximize absorption
Swallowed directly
- Drop 1-2 mL into a small glass
- Add a splash of water or juice if desired
- Drink
Onset: 30-45 minutes
Best for: Long-duration effects (Reishi for evening calm, Turkey Tail for daytime immune support)
Pro tip: Take with food if you find the alcohol harsh on an empty stomach

What this is NOT
- Not psychoactive. These are functional mushroom tinctures. No psilocybin, no THC, no controlled substances.
- Not a substitute for medication. If you're on prescription medications (especially blood thinners — Reishi has anticoagulant properties), consult your healthcare provider before adding.
- Not for pregnancy or nursing. Standard supplement caution: pregnant and nursing individuals should consult healthcare providers.
- Not for children. Adult use only.
- Not a complete diet replacement. Use as a dietary supplement; not a substitute for a balanced diet.
- Not for cooking. While you can technically add it to food, the alcohol carrier is optimized for sublingual or direct consumption, not for incorporation into recipes.
- Not psilocybin tincture. If you are looking for psilocybin-containing tincture, see the recipes in The Mushroom Chef Cookbook (also from Colorado Cultures) for DIY preparation in legal-cultivation jurisdictions. This product is non-psychoactive.
