Psilocybe bohemica, commonly referred to as the Bohemian Psilocybe, is a potent psilocybin mushroom native to Central Europe, particularly the Czech Republic, where it was first described. Often confused with Psilocybe serbica and Psilocybe cyanescens, this species is notable for its strong psychoactive effects, wavy cap margin, and growth in woody, decaying plant matter—particularly in coniferous forests.
P. bohemica was first identified in Bohemia (now part of the Czech Republic) in 1983. Initially categorized separately, it is now considered by many mycologists to be a synonym of Psilocybe serbica due to molecular similarity. Regardless of classification, the name "Bohemian Psilocybe" remains widely used to describe mushrooms from this region with intensely visual and cerebral psychedelic effects.
It has been a focal point for European mycophiles seeking wild, naturally growing entheogenic species.
The mushroom has a bell-shaped to conical cap, ranging from 1.5 to 5 cm in diameter, caramel to golden brown in color, and hygrophanous (fades as it dries). The gills are dark purplish-brown, and the stem is thin, flexible, and bruises deep blue when handled—an indicator of high psilocybin content.
Its effects are highly psychedelic, featuring strong visual distortions, auditory enhancements, altered perception of time, and deep introspection. It is typically consumed dried and is sought after for personal exploration, nature immersion, and therapeutic journeys, though it requires proper identification due to confusion with toxic look-alikes.
