Minami Okinawa Mushroom

Minami Okinawa

Common Names: Japanese Cubensis

About

Minami Okinawa is a relatively new, wild-collected strain of Psilocybe cubensis that originated in Japan. It was initially discovered and collected on Ishigaki Island, which is closer to Taiwan than to Okinawa proper. The actual Japanese name for this mushroom is Minami Shibiretake (ミナミ シビレタケ), which translates to "south numbing mushroom".

The strain was introduced to the wider mycology community through the Minami Self Help Group, a private Facebook group dedicated to cultivating this unique Japanese strain. The name "Minami Okinawa" was chosen because "Minami" is also a common girl's name in Japan, in addition to meaning "south".

While the exact date of discovery is not mentioned in the search results, the strain appears to be relatively recent in the world of cultivated Psilocybe cubensis varieties. It's worth noting that magic mushrooms, including Psilocybe cubensis, were legal in Japan until 2002, when they were banned ahead of the World Cup hosted in the country.
