About
Wolfiporia extensa, also known as Poria cocos, Hoelen, or Fu Ling, is a sclerotium-forming medicinal fungus long revered in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). It grows underground in association with pine roots and forms large, tuber-like masses that are harvested for their powerful diuretic, digestive, and calming properties. Unlike many mushrooms, it is not valued for a fruiting body but rather its subterranean hardened mycelium.
History
Used in China for over 2,000 years, Poria is one of the most widely prescribed fungi in Eastern herbalism. It was first recorded in the Shennong Ben Cao Jing, an ancient pharmacopeia. Historically, it was believed to calm the "heart and spirit" and was frequently used for insomnia, anxiety, and fluid retention.
Western interest in W. extensa has grown due to its adaptogenic and anti-inflammatory qualities. It remains a staple in herbal formulas across Asia, often found in decoctions and pill form.
Overview
Wolfiporia extensa develops underground as a hardened, potato-sized sclerotium with a tough brown exterior and white interior. It lacks a traditional mushroom cap or stem. It thrives in pine forests, especially in East Asia and North America.
The sclerotium is dried and ground into powder or sliced for use in teas and tinctures. It contains polysaccharides, triterpenes, and pachymic acid, which contribute to its anti-inflammatory, diuretic, antioxidant, and sedative properties. While not culinary, it is often blended with other herbs in TCM for digestive support and to strengthen the spleen and kidney meridians.
