Amanita muscaria, commonly known as the Fly Agaric, is one of the most iconic and visually recognizable mushrooms in the world, with its bright red cap and white spots. While not a psilocybin mushroom, it is psychoactive due to the presence of muscimol and ibotenic acid, which produce dissociative, dreamlike, and sometimes delirious states. This mushroom has been used for centuries in shamanic rituals, particularly in Siberia and Northern Europe.
Historically, Amanita muscaria was used in Siberian shamanism, where it played a central role in visionary ceremonies. Some anthropologists link its use to the myth of the Vedic Soma, a mysterious ritual drink described in Hindu scriptures. The term “Fly Agaric” comes from its historic use in Europe as an insecticide—pieces were left in milk to attract and kill flies.
Although toxic in large amounts or when improperly prepared, careful drying reduces ibotenic acid to muscimol, the primary psychoactive compound. Its use in modern entheogenic circles is rare but growing, especially among those exploring non-psilocybin pathways of altered consciousness.
This mushroom features a bright red cap with white warts, often 8–20 cm in diameter, and a thick white stem with a ring and bulbous base. It is mycorrhizal, forming symbiotic relationships with birch, pine, and spruce trees in northern forests across Europe, Asia, and North America.
Effects include sedation, vivid dreams, euphoria, disorientation, and in higher doses, out-of-body sensations. It must be prepared with care to minimize toxicity, typically by drying or parboiling. While not recommended for casual use, it holds cultural, historical, and spiritual significance.

Microdosing psilocybin has been shown to help with certain types of pain
Research shows that psilocybin, the active compound in magic mushrooms, has potential therapeutic benefits for migraines.4 A small-scale study conducted by Yale School of Medicine found that a single dose of psilocybin reduced the likelihood of having a migraine attack in two weeks.

Species: Amanita caesarea
(Caesar's mushroom)
Edibility: edible - highly regarded for its culinary value, but should be properly identified to avoid confusion with toxic species.
Key Differences: Amanita caesarea has an orange cap and lacks the distinctive white spots of Amanita muscaria. It also has a volva that is large and sack-like, unlike the small, collar-like volva of Amanita muscaria.
