An easy mushroom hot chocolate recipe with reishi or lion's mane, why cocoa hides the earthy taste, and how to keep the benefits in the mug.

Mushroom hot chocolate is the easiest and most delicious way to build a functional mushroom into your day. It hides the earthy, sometimes bitter taste of mushrooms like reishi and lion's mane inside rich cocoa, it is warming and comforting, and, because the active compounds in properly extracted mushrooms hold up to heat, you lose nothing by stirring them into a hot drink. Here is how to make it, which mushrooms to use, and why it works.
Cacao is bold, slightly bitter, and aromatic, which makes it a near-perfect vehicle for functional mushrooms. The flavors that can make a straight reishi tea a hard sell, earthy and bitter, disappear into chocolate. Cacao also brings its own polyphenols and a gentle lift from theobromine, so a mushroom cocoa feels like a treat rather than a supplement. And crucially, the beta-glucans and other compounds in an extracted mushroom powder or tincture are not destroyed by the heat of a hot drink, so the mug delivers what the label promises.
For one mug, gently warm about one cup of milk or a plant milk (oat and coconut both work beautifully). Whisk in one to two teaspoons of good cocoa or cacao powder, a teaspoon of maple syrup or honey to taste, and a small pinch of salt. Then add your mushroom: either a measured dose of an extract powder such as our super-food extract powders, or a dropper of tincture stirred in at the end. Whisk until frothy and drink warm. That is the whole method; the mushroom choice is where you tailor it.
Reishi, for an evening wind-down. Reishi is the classic bedtime cocoa mushroom, a calming traditional tonic whose bitterness cocoa tames completely. A reishi tincture stirred into warm cocoa is a soothing nightcap, and our reishi tea guide covers the mushroom in more depth.
Lion's mane, for a focus-friendly morning or afternoon cup. Lion's mane is the cognitive-support mushroom, so a lion's mane cocoa makes a pleasant midday alternative to coffee. See our best lion's mane supplement guide for choosing a good one.
A blend, for everyday support. If you would rather not think about it, a multi-mushroom blend powder folds broad daily support into your cocoa in one scoop.
The quality of your mushroom decides whether the cocoa does anything beyond taste good. Use an extract, not raw milled mushroom, because the beta-glucans need to be freed from the chitin cell wall to be available to you; reference guides on medicinal mushrooms make the same point about why powdering and extraction matter. Choose fruiting body over mycelium-on-grain, and favor third-party-tested products. Our mushroom powder guide explains how to read for all of this.
As with any functional mushroom, a single cup will not transform anything; the value comes from making it a regular ritual. A nightly reishi cocoa or a daily lion's mane mocha is a genuinely enjoyable way to keep that consistency.
Mushroom hot chocolate turns a supplement into a treat: warming, delicious, and, with a properly extracted powder or tincture, a real dose of functional mushrooms. Match the mushroom to the moment, reishi to wind down, lion's mane to focus, a blend for all-round support, use a lab-tested fruiting-body extract, and make it a habit. No. The beta-glucans and other active compounds in a properly extracted mushroom powder or tincture are not destroyed by the heat of a hot drink, so stirring them into hot chocolate does not reduce their value. In fact, hot preparation is how reishi's compounds are traditionally extracted.
