Sawdust spawn is sterilized hardwood sawdust that has been fully colonized with mushroom mycelium. Because it is the same material many mushrooms naturally fruit on, it bonds quickly to logs and bulk wood substrates and colonizes more thoroughly than dowel plugs, which makes it the workhorse spawn for serious log and outdoor growers.
The most common use is log and totem inoculation. Paired with a plunger-style inoculation tool, you press colonized sawdust into drilled holes, then seal with wax. Because each hole holds far more living mycelium than a single plug, sawdust-inoculated logs often colonize and begin fruiting sooner. Sawdust spawn is also used to build stacked totems, to supplement outdoor beds, and to expand into more sawdust or supplemented hardwood blocks.
It suits the full range of wood-loving mushrooms, from shiitake and oyster to lion's mane, reishi, maitake, and many specialty species. Our bags ship fully colonized and ready to use; break the block apart to distribute fresh growing tips before you inoculate, which speeds and evens out colonization.
Choose sawdust spawn when you are inoculating a lot of logs or want the fastest wood colonization; choose plug spawn when you want the simplest possible setup with no inoculation tool, and grain spawn for indoor grows on pasteurized bulk substrate. Whichever you pick, keep everything clean during transfer and inoculate promptly, then follow the growing guides for species-specific soaking and fruiting steps.
