The caterpillar fungus costs more than gold, so your cordyceps isn't it. What militaris and CS-4 really are, and what the energy research actually shows.

Cordyceps has a great origin story: a fungus that infects a caterpillar, consumes it from the inside, and sends a club-shaped fruiting body up out of the dead insect's head. That fungus, the Himalayan caterpillar fungus, is real, revered, and more expensive than gold. It is also almost certainly not what is in your supplement. Here is what cordyceps actually is, and what you are really buying.
The original cordyceps is Ophiocordyceps sinensis (long known as Cordyceps sinensis), a fungus that grows from the bodies of ghost moth caterpillars in the high alpine meadows of Tibet, Nepal, and China. Harvested by hand at altitude, it has been prized in traditional Chinese medicine for over a thousand years as a lung and kidney tonic and an energy and stamina builder. It is called yartsa gunbu, "summer grass, winter worm."
It is also one of the most expensive biological materials on earth, gram for gram worth more than gold. So the economics are simple: the wild caterpillar fungus is not going into a modestly priced bottle of capsules. Something else is.
Nearly all cordyceps sold in the West is the cultivated mycelium or fruiting body of Cordyceps militaris, a different but related species. This is not a scam; it is a sensible substitute. C. militaris is bright orange, grows readily in cultivation on grains like rice, and by chemical analysis shares many of the same active compounds as the wild caterpillar fungus, including cordycepin and adenosine, which it actually tends to contain in higher amounts. If your label says Cordyceps militaris, you are buying an honest, cultivable stand-in for a mushroom almost no one can afford.
Cordyceps is one of the worst mushroom categories for mislabeling, so it pays to read closely. A few things sold as "cordyceps" are not Cordyceps at all.
The big one is CS-4. It is a specific strain properly named Paecilomyces hepiali, and it is not true cordyceps, though it is genuinely the material used in most of the published human trials. Others are murkier: some products labeled cordyceps have turned out to contain Tolypocladium inflatum, a fungus that produces small amounts of the immune-suppressing drug cyclosporin, which is not something you want to take unknowingly. The practical defense is the same as with reishi: buy a product that names its exact species on the label, ideally Cordyceps militaris, and be skeptical of anything that just says "cordyceps" with a caterpillar on the box.
Cordyceps is marketed hard for energy, endurance, and stamina, which matches its traditional use. The honest status of that evidence is thin and mixed. Human trials are few and small. One study of a CS-4 product found a roughly 10 percent improvement in aerobic markers in older adults; another, in trained cyclists, found no endurance benefit at all. Most of the supporting data comes from animal studies. There is somewhat stronger, though still preliminary, human work on kidney protection, again mostly using CS-4.
The fair way to describe cordyceps is a traditional energy-and-stamina tonic with a compelling history, real bioactive compounds like cordycepin, and a modern evidence base that is early and inconsistent. It is not a proven performance drug, and the famous 1993 story of Chinese women runners shattering world records "on cordyceps" is a cautionary tale as much as a selling point: it later emerged that some of those athletes were using banned performance-enhancing drugs too.
The romantic caterpillar fungus and the affordable supplement are two different mushrooms, and that is fine as long as you know which one you are buying. Look for Cordyceps militaris named on the label, treat the energy claims as promising rather than proven, and enjoy one of the strangest life cycles in the fungal world for what it is.
