Mushroom substrate is the nutrient-rich material your mycelium colonizes and fruits from, and the best choice depends on the species you are growing. Wood-loving gourmet mushrooms such as lion's mane, shiitake, and oyster mushrooms perform best on a hardwood-based Master’s Mix of hardwood sawdust and soy hull pellets. Many other cultivated species do well on a manure-free bulk substrate of coco coir, vermiculite, and gypsum, which is inexpensive, forgiving, and easy to prepare at home.
Our bulk mushroom substrates arrive pre-mixed and ready to hydrate, so you can skip sourcing and weighing individual ingredients. Pair them with colonized grain spawn and a monotub or all-in-one grow bag for a complete grow.
Most bulk substrates are pasteurized rather than fully sterilized. Heating the hydrated substrate to roughly 160–170°F (70–77°C) for about an hour knocks back competitor organisms while leaving beneficial microbes in place to protect the substrate. Once it cools, mix colonized grain spawn thoroughly through the substrate at roughly one part spawn to two to four parts substrate, load it into your fruiting container, and let it colonize fully before introducing fresh air and fruiting conditions.
Getting the moisture right matters as much as the recipe. A properly hydrated substrate is at field capacity, damp enough that a firm squeeze releases only a few drops of water, never a stream. Too wet and the mix goes anaerobic and sours; too dry and the mycelium grows thin and wispy and struggles to fruit. Coir-based mixes are especially forgiving because they hold moisture evenly and resist compaction, which is why they are the usual recommendation for a first grow.
Not sure how much to make? Size your mix to your container with the substrate calculator, and check the growing guides for species-specific colonization temperatures and fruiting parameters. New growers usually get the most consistent results starting with a coir-based bulk substrate and well-colonized grain spawn, then moving on to supplemented hardwood Master’s Mix for higher-yielding wood-lovers once they have a clean grow or two under their belt.
